Metallurgical slag, fly ash, and other industrial waste will soon be used in road construction, said Minister of Infrastructure Vladyslav Kryklii, commenting on the Cabinet of Ministers’ resolution “On the Use of Industrial Waste in Road Construction”

“This decision of the Government, in particular, allows us to avoid dependence on imports of construction materials, in particular bitumen, from the Russian Federation. This will also allow us to save money during road works, while the quality will be at the proper level,” Vladislav Kryklii noted.

“A base of regulatory and technical documents has already been developed, taking into account both domestic and European experience in this matter. These standards regulate the requirements for technological processes and components of road concrete, the main of which is the use of exclusively high-quality Portland cement, as well as metallurgical slags directly,” the minister emphasized.

From now on, when carrying out public procurement of construction works and services for the current repair of public roads, the non-price criterion “Environmental protection measures” with a specific weight of at least 10% will be necessarily included.

Contracts for the construction and current repair of public roads in Zaporizhia, Donetsk, Luhansk, Dnipropetrovsk, Mykolaiv, Kirovohrad regions will provide for the use of production waste (metallurgical slag, bottom ash, etc.) that comply with regulatory documents.

Today, the price criterion has remained the only criterion used by customers when performing repair and construction works on public roads to determine contracting organizations.

Such a decision should improve the environmental situation – waste will not pollute the environment, but “work” for the benefit of society.
